for what crime they were put to death,1

For what sin she was killed
— Saheeh International
and when the records ˹of deeds˺ are laid open,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And when the pages1 are spread [i.e., made public]
— Saheeh International
and when the sky is stripped away,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And when the sky is stripped away
— Saheeh International
and when the Hellfire is fiercely flared up,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And when Hellfire is set ablaze
— Saheeh International
and when Paradise is brought near—
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And when Paradise is brought near,
— Saheeh International
˹on that Day˺ each soul will know what ˹deeds˺ it has brought along.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].1
— Saheeh International
I do swear by the receding stars
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
So I swear by the retreating stars -
— Saheeh International
which travel and hide,1
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]
— Saheeh International
and the night as it falls
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And by the night as it closes in1
— Saheeh International
and the day as it breaks!1
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]
— Saheeh International
Indeed, this ˹Quran˺ is the Word of ˹Allah delivered by Gabriel,˺ a noble messenger-angel,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]
