but no messenger ever came to them without being mocked.

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

This is how We allow disbelief ˹to steep˺ into the hearts of the wicked.

Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.
— Saheeh International
They would not believe in this ˹Quran˺ despite the ˹many˺ examples of those ˹destroyed˺ before.

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.
— Saheeh International
And even if We opened for them a gate to heaven, through which they continued to ascend,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,
— Saheeh International
still they would say, “Our eyes have truly been dazzled! In fact, we must have been bewitched.”

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."
— Saheeh International
Indeed, We have placed constellations in the sky, and adorned it for all to see.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.
— Saheeh International
And We protected it from every accursed devil,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah]
— Saheeh International
except the one eavesdropping, who is then pursued by a visible flare.1
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.
— Saheeh International
As for the earth, We spread it out and placed upon it firm mountains, and caused everything to grow there in perfect balance.

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.
— Saheeh International
And We made in it means of sustenance for you and others, who you do not provide for.

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.1
— Saheeh International
There is not any means ˹of sustenance˺ whose reserves We do not hold, only bringing it forth in precise measure.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known [i.e., specified] measure.
