We dispersed them through the land in groups—some were righteous, others were less so. We tested them with prosperity and adversity, so perhaps they would return ˹to the Right Path˺.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].

Then they were succeeded by other generations who inherited the Scripture. They indulged in unlawful gains, claiming, “We will be forgiven ˹after all˺.” And if similar gain came their way, they would seize it. Was a covenant not taken from them in the Scripture that they would not say anything about Allah except the truth? And they were already well-versed in its teachings. But the ˹eternal˺ Home of the Hereafter is far better for those mindful ˹of Allah˺. Will you not then understand?

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities1 of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it2 comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah, so will you not use reason?

— Saheeh International

As for those who firmly abide by the Scripture and establish prayer—surely We never discount the reward of those acting righteously.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

But those who hold fast to the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and establish prayer - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.

— Saheeh International

And ˹remember˺ when We raised the mountain over them as if it were a cloud and they thought it would fall on them.1 ˹We said,˺ “Hold firmly to that ˹Scripture˺ which We have given you and observe its teachings so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them,1 [and Allah said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allah."

— Saheeh International

ﭳﭴ ﭶﭷ ﭸﭹ ﭿ

And ˹remember˺ when your Lord brought forth from the loins of the children of Adam their descendants and had them testify regarding themselves. ˹Allah asked,˺ “Am I not your Lord?” They replied, “Yes, You are! We testify.” ˹He cautioned,˺ “Now you have no right to say on Judgment Day, ‘We were not aware of this.’

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."

— Saheeh International

Nor say, ‘It was our forefathers who had associated others ˹with Allah in worship˺ and we, as their descendants, followed in their footsteps. Will you then destroy us for the falsehood they invented?’”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"

— Saheeh International

This is how We make our signs clear, so perhaps they will return ˹to the Right Path˺.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return.1

— Saheeh International

And relate to them ˹O Prophet˺ the story of the one to whom We gave Our signs, but he abandoned them, so Satan took hold of him, and he became a deviant.1

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And recite to them, [O Muḥammad], the news of him1 to whom We gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators.2

— Saheeh International

ﯓﯔ ﯞﯟ ﯥﯦ

If We had willed, We would have elevated him with Our signs, but he clung to this life—following his evil desires. His example is that of a dog: if you chase it away, it pants, and if you leave it, it ˹still˺ pants. This is the example of the people who deny Our signs.1 So narrate ˹to them˺ stories ˹of the past˺, so perhaps they will reflect.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby,1 but he adhered [instead] to the earth2 and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs.3 So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.

— Saheeh International

What an evil example of those who denied Our signs! They ˹only˺ wronged their own souls.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

How evil an example [is that of] the people who denied Our signs and used to wrong themselves.

— Saheeh International

ﯺﯻ ﯿ

Whoever Allah guides is truly guided. And whoever He leaves to stray, they are the ˹true˺ losers.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Whoever Allah guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray1 - it is those who are the losers.

— Saheeh International
