O believers! Do not approach prayer while intoxicated1 until you are aware of what you say, nor in a state of ˹full˺ impurity2—unless you merely pass through ˹the mosque˺—until you have bathed. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands.3 And Allah is Ever-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying1 or in a state of janābah,2 except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women [i.e., had sexual intercourse] and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning3 and Forgiving.

Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who were given a portion of the Scriptures yet trade it for misguidance and wish to see you deviate from the ˹Right˺ Path?

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, purchasing error [in exchange for it] and wishing you would lose the way?

— Saheeh International

Allah knows best who your enemies are! And Allah is sufficient as a Guardian, and He is sufficient as a Helper.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And Allah is most knowing of your enemies; and sufficient is Allah as an ally, and sufficient is Allah as a helper.

Some Jews take words out of context and say, “We listen and we disobey,” “Hear! May you never hear,” and “Râ’ina!” [Herd us!]—playing with words and discrediting the faith. Had they said ˹courteously˺, “We hear and obey,” “Listen to us,” and “Unẓurna,” [Tend to us!] it would have been better for them and more proper. Allah has condemned them for their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] places [i.e., usages] and say, "We hear and disobey" and "Hear but be not heard" and "Rāʿinā,"1 twisting their tongues and defaming the religion. And if they had said [instead], "We hear and obey" and "Wait for us [to understand]," it would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.2

O you who were given the Book! Believe in what We have revealed—confirming your own Scriptures—before We wipe out ˹your˺ faces, turning them backwards, or We condemn the defiant as We did to the Sabbath-breakers.1 And Allah’s command is always executed!

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

O you who were given the Scripture, believe in what We have sent down [to Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], confirming that which is with you, before We obliterate faces and turn them toward their backs or curse them as We cursed the sabbath-breakers.1 And ever is the matter [i.e., decree] of Allah accomplished.

Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with Him ˹in worship˺,1 but forgives anything else of whoever He wills. And whoever associates others with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.

— Saheeh International

ﯞﯟ

Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who ˹falsely˺ elevate themselves? It is Allah who elevates whoever He wills. And none will be wronged ˹even by the width of˺ the thread of a date stone.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Have you not seen those who claim themselves to be pure? Rather, Allah purifies whom He wills, and injustice is not done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed].

— Saheeh International

ﯮﯯ

See how they fabricate lies against Allah—this alone is a blatant sin.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Look how they invent about Allah untruth, and sufficient is that as a manifest sin.

Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who were given a portion of the Scriptures yet believe in idols and false gods and reassure the disbelievers1 that they are better guided than the believers?

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, who believe in jibt [superstition] and ṭāghūt [false objects of worship] and say about the disbelievers, "These are better guided than the believers as to the way"?

— Saheeh International

ﭔﭕ

It is they who have been condemned by Allah. And whoever is condemned by Allah will have no helper.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; and he whom Allah curses - never will you find for him a helper.

— Saheeh International

Do they have control over shares of the kingdom? If so, they would not have given anyone so much as the speck on a date stone.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Or have they a share of dominion? Then [if that were so], they would not give the people [even as much as] the speck on a date seed.
