who entered upon him and greeted ˹him with˺, “Peace!” He ˹later˺ said, “Surely we are afraid of you.”1

When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful [i.e., apprehensive] of you."
— Saheeh International
They reassured ˹him˺, “Do not be afraid! Surely we give you good news of a knowledgeable son.”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."
— Saheeh International
He wondered, “Do you give me good news despite my old age? What unlikely news!”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"
— Saheeh International
They responded, “We give you good news in all truth, so do not be one of those who despair.”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."
— Saheeh International
He exclaimed, “Who would despair of the mercy of their Lord except the misguided?”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"
— Saheeh International
He ˹then˺ added, “What is your mission, O messenger-angels?”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
— Saheeh International
They replied, “We have actually been sent to a wicked people.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,
— Saheeh International
As for the family of Lot, we will certainly deliver them all,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all
— Saheeh International
except his wife. We have determined that she will be one of the doomed.”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Except his wife." We [i.e., Allah] decreed that she is of those who remain behind.1
— Saheeh International
So when the messengers came to the family of Lot,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,
— Saheeh International
he said, “You are surely an unfamiliar people!”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."
— Saheeh International
They responded, “We have come to you with that ˹torment˺ which they have doubted.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,
— Saheeh International
We come to you with the truth, and we are certainly truthful.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.
— Saheeh International
So travel with your family in the dark of night, and follow ˹closely˺ behind them. Do not let any of you look back, and go where you are commanded.”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."
— Saheeh International
We revealed to him this decree: “Those ˹sinners˺ will be uprooted in the morning.”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.
— Saheeh International
And there came the men of the city, rejoicing.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And the people of the city came rejoicing.1
— Saheeh International
Lot pleaded, “Indeed, these are my guests, so do not embarrass me.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.
— Saheeh International
Fear Allah and do not humiliate me.”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And fear Allah and do not disgrace me."
— Saheeh International
They responded, “Have we not forbidden you from protecting anyone?”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"
— Saheeh International
