They replied, “These are confused visions and we do not know the interpretation of such dreams.”

They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams."

˹Finally,˺ the surviving ex-prisoner remembered ˹Joseph˺ after a long time and said, “I will tell you its interpretation, so send me forth ˹to Joseph˺.”

But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth."

˹He said,˺ “Joseph, O  man of truth! Interpret for us ˹the dream of˺ seven fat cows eaten up by seven skinny ones; and seven green ears of grain and ˹seven˺ others dry, so that I may return to the people and let them know.”

[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people [i.e., the king and his court]; perhaps they will know [about you]."

Joseph replied, “You will plant ˹grain˺ for seven consecutive years, leaving in the ear whatever you will harvest, except for the little you will eat.

[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat.

Then after that will come seven years of great hardship which will consume whatever you have saved, except the little you will store ˹for seed˺.

Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you advanced [i.e., saved] for them, except a little from which you will store.

— Saheeh International

Then after that will come a year in which people will receive abundant rain and they will press ˹oil and wine˺.”

Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]."

The King ˹then˺ said, “Bring him to me.” When the messenger came to him, Joseph said, “Go back to your master and ask him about the case of the women who cut their hands. Surely my Lord has ˹full˺ knowledge of their cunning.”

And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan."

— Saheeh International

ﯪﯫ ﯳﯴ ﯿ

The King asked ˹the women˺, “What did you get when you tried to seduce Joseph?” They replied, “Allah forbid! We know nothing indecent about him.” Then the Chief Minister’s wife admitted, “Now the truth has come to light. It was I who tried to seduce him, and he is surely truthful.

Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allah!1 We know about him no evil." The wife of al-ʿAzeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.

From this, Joseph should know that I did not speak dishonestly about him in his absence, for Allah certainly does not guide the scheming of the dishonest.

That is so he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allah does not guide the plan of betrayers.
