But as soon as We removed the torments from them, they broke their promise.

But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.

And Pharaoh called out to his people, boasting, “O my people! Am I not sovereign over Egypt as well as ˹all˺ these streams1 flowing at my feet? Can you not see?

And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?
— Saheeh International
Am I not better than this nobody who can hardly express himself?1
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Or am I [not] better than this one [i.e., Moses] who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?1
— Saheeh International
Why then have no golden bracelets ˹of kingship˺ been granted to him or angels come with him as escorts!”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"
— Saheeh International
And so he fooled his people, and they obeyed him. They were truly a rebellious people.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah].
— Saheeh International
So when they enraged Us, We inflicted punishment upon them, drowning them all.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.
— Saheeh International
And We made them an example and a lesson for those after them.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.
— Saheeh International
When the son of Mary was cited as an example ˹in argument˺, your people ˹O Prophet˺ broke into ˹joyful˺ applause.1
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And when the son of Mary was presented as an example,1 immediately your people laughed aloud.
— Saheeh International
They exclaimed, “Which is better: our gods or Jesus?” They cite him only to argue. In fact, they are a people prone to dispute.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And they said, "Are our gods better, or is he?"1 They did not present it [i.e., the comparison] except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
— Saheeh International
He was only a servant We showed favour to, and made as an example for the Children of Israel.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
He [i.e., Jesus] was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
— Saheeh International
Had We willed, We could have easily replaced you ˹all˺ with angels,1 succeeding one another on earth.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another]1 on the earth.
— Saheeh International
